Ugandan demands total ban on production of single use plastics , This was raised during a public Debate .The world Environment Day, established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, is the UN's principal platform for encouraging global awareness and action to protect the environment, in uganda the issue of plastic pollution is particularly concerning with the country generating about 600 metric tones of plastic wastes daily, with Kampala city alone accounting for approximately 180 tones and only about 30% is collected .
During the Debate the E D of NEMA .Dr. Barirega Ankankwasah agrees to the public concerns that the un-collected waste pollutes drainage channels lakes , and rivers , creating health hazards, blocking waterways and degrading ecosystem.
According to National Environment Management Autholity, only 9% of plastic wastes has been recycled , while 79% ends up in landfills or the natural environment.
With plastic pollution threatening uganda's natural resources, public health, Agriculture and blue economy.
NEMA calls upon all ugandan: policy makers, manufacturers, local government and communities and youth to rise as one end take action against plastic pollution. "Together, we can protect our environment preserve our biodiversity, and secure a sustainable future"
